Portrait photography checklist

As a portrait photographer, I have a penchant for using an 85mm prime lens. This lens offers the perfect balance between sharpness and a beautiful bokeh effect, resulting in portraits that are both detailed and artistic. My camera of choice is a Sony, because of its superior image quality, reliable autofocus and ease of use. I also use Profoto lighting equipment, known for their consistency and versatility, to create the best lighting conditions, both indoors and outdoors.

As you can see, I come prepared for the photo shoot. Now for you!

What should you think about when you want to have a portrait photo taken?

Such a portrait shoot can be an exciting experience, especially if you don't know exactly what to expect. Here is a checklist to help you prepare optimally for a portrait photo shoot.

  1. Clothing choice: Bring several outfits to vary during the shoot. Make sure clothes are clean and ironed. Choose outfits that reflect your personality and in which you feel comfortable. Avoid overly busy patterns, logos or texts as they distract from your face. Instead, opt for solid colours or subtle patterns. Also bring different options for shoes and accessories.
  2. Hair and make-up: Your hair should look its best for the photo shoot. If you have a hairstyle that gets tangled easily, consider bringing some hair products for quick adjustments. If you plan to colour your hair, do so at least a week before the shoot so that the colour can settle. As for make-up, keep it natural and avoid shiny products that can cause unwanted reflections. You can always bring extra make-up to touch up during the shoot.
  3. Appearance: Looking good is the key to a successful photo shoot. To achieve this, you need to feel relaxed and comfortable. Try to sleep well the night before the shoot and eat a healthy meal before you leave. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals the day before the shoot as these can swell your face.
  4. Practice your poses: It is a good idea to practise some poses beforehand. Look in the mirror and try different facial expressions and poses. Try to be natural and avoid forced smiles or poses. You can also look at photos of models or celebrities whose style you admire for inspiration. An endless source of inspiration is Pinterest. For example, create your own "board" with poses you like, then together we'll look at how to do it.
  5. Communication with the photographer: Of course, I will guide you as best I can and make suggestions, but it is important to communicate your own ideas and expectations. If you have specific shots in mind, let them know in advance.
  6. Accessories and props: Accessories can be a fun way to express your personality and add variety to your photos. Think jewellery, hats, scarves, or even your favourite book or musical instrument. However, keep in mind that accessories should not be too distracting and should not overshadow the main purpose of the shoot - your portrait.
  7. Time management: Make sure you are well in time for your photo shoot. It is important not to be rushed or stressed as this may show through in your photos. If you need time to get ready or change before the shoot, take this into account when planning your day.

With this portrait photography checklist, you will be well prepared for your portrait photo shoot. Remember, the main goal is to have fun and be yourself. It's your moment to shine!
