Street photography workshops in Antwerp

Antwerp, one of my favourite cities for street photography! There are countless photogenic spots in the city, such as the Grote Markt, the Groenplaats, the Vogelenmarkt and the streets around it. Small quiet courtyards, the Meir with its hustle and bustle.

The city has a diverse character, with cosy neighbourhoods such as Zurenborg and Eilandje and diverse districts such as Chinatown. This offers a wide range of opportunities for street photography, during and after the workshop. Antwerp alternates historical monuments with up to modern architecture, which of course provides fantastic backgrounds for our photos! In short, Antwerp is a city that has a lot to offer street photographers.

Below street photography workshops are for beginners and people who have held a camera in their hands before. I'm sure I can teach you to see things differently!

I prefer to book a 1-on-1 workshop

"As a present for myself, I booked the 1-on-1 street photography workshop with Michiel Heijmans. I haven't regretted this for a moment!"

Karlijn van Kalmthout, participant 1-on-1 street photography workshop

Street photography workshop

A street photographer walking through Antwerp will be treated to a plethora of photogenic spots and subjects. You can indulge in the Stadspark, a beautiful park in the heart of the city, where the green surroundings provide a nice contrast to the surrounding buildings. Then, of course, visit the Vogeltjesmarkt, a colourful market selling fresh produce, flowers, plants and other goods. In the crowds, you won't stand out. And look around you: what photogenic buildings!

Of course, you will also stroll to visit the Cathedral of Our Lady, a beautiful Gothic church known for its tall tower and impressive interior. Plenty to do, and I'll provide a nice cross-section. We finish sometime between 1pm and 2pm, so you'll have plenty of time to stroll around by yourself after the workshop!

In the workshop, I will teach you to hunt and fish. We will look at framing and capturing movement. And of course, if you have any questions of your own, we'll address them too!

Make a weekend of it

Should you wish to book my workshops as part of your own city break, I will be happy to make some suggestions for accommodation and dinner.

Restaurant suggestions Antwerp

  • Just an easy way to eat something surprising? Then try the burgers at Ellis Burger. Nothing difficult, but tasty.
  • A fine wine bar to eat as well can be found a little further out of the city centre. Stroll in at Patine. In fine weather, a lovely spot to let Antwerp pass you by. Lovely wine list.
  • A little more budget? If you're lucky there's room at Non Solo Té. Two starters, two main courses. And then just incredibly good. Delicious neighbourhood too.

Hotel suggestions Antwerp

  • I am a regular guest at B&B Hotels. Great rooms, great beds. Antwerp South is my pitch when I sleep in Antwerp. Supermarket around the corner, park and water.
  • One hotel I have walked past several times, but never slept at, is Hotel O Next to the Cathedral of Our Lady. I put it here anyway, and would love to hear from you how you liked it.

From experience, I would also like to tell you that it is better to skip Hotel Beaux Arts in Antwerp...

About Michiel

I am Michiel Heijmans, professional street photographer. Together with friend Niels, I make the photography podcast 30 Minutes Shutter speed. My new photo book "The Observer" is in shops now (Komma Publishing, 2024).

For Photofacts I previously wrote the book "Straatfotobijbel" (2023). I also write monthly columns for Focus Magazine, the photography magazine of the Netherlands.

From the moment I immersed myself in street photography, I was hooked. I don't leave the house without a camera because street photography can be done anywhere!
