Well-known portrait photographers
A good portrait goes further than a good-looking image: it catches the essence of a person. The best portrait photographers in the world have each developed a style of their own, leaving a recognisable signature in portraiture. From iconic names in the history of photography to present-day masters, these photographers are a source of inspiration for anyone who wants to go deeper into the craft.
I look at these heroes with admiration. They give me a point on the horizon, and to get there I gladly lose myself in portrait sessions, at home or in the studio. By studying their work you learn not only about technique and composition, but above all about how to make a connection with the person in front of your lens. That is exactly what I try to pass on in my one-to-one portrait workshop: the art of making portraits that really say something.
Whether you are just starting with portraiture or have years of experience, the work of gifted portrait photographers keeps inspiring you to develop.

Stephan Vanfleteren
At number one on this list, of course, my great example Stephan Vanfleteren. He is known for his powerful black and white portraits with their deep, timeless quality. His work is steeped in contrast and simplicity, which gives every portrait an intense emotional charge. Through his use of subtle light and minimal distraction in the background, he catches the essence of his subjects in a way that is almost tangible. His portraits reveal the soul of the people in front of him, whether anonymous faces or well-known figures.
Alongside his portraits, Vanfleteren has realised countless projects exploring Flemish identity and human existence. His book Portraits gathers a large part of his most influential work and shows how, with an apparently simple approach, he creates enormous impact. His portraits are intimate, sometimes confronting, but always with a deep respect for the individual he photographs.
What sets Vanfleteren apart is his ability to bring timelessness and character into an image. His subjects, from unknowns to celebrities, are often captured with minimal distraction, so the emphasis falls entirely on their faces and expressions. His work is widely exhibited and praised for the pure, honest way it records the human condition. His portraits do not feel merely like images, but like stories that invite the viewer to pause a little longer at the power of simplicity and emotion.
Add to all that the apparently effortless way he switches between portrait, street, documentary and landscape photography, and it appeals to me enormously. A broad interest, photographed from an almost obsessive drive to record good things. From Surf Tribe to Transcripts of a Sea; so inspiring.
