Oh, Nijmegen. My home city.

I live right next door, in Wijchen. Nijmegen is where I first pointed a camera at the street.

Nijmegen is known for its rich history, its easy atmosphere and its beautiful architecture. It is the oldest city in the Netherlands.

I organise photo walks in Nijmegen regularly. I know the old centre like the back of my hand, and I am certain I can show you photogenic places you have not seen. See you soon?

The workshops below are for beginners and for people who have held a camera plenty of times before. I am certain I can teach you to look differently.

Street photography from a clear idea

The centre of Nijmegen is home to a number of historic buildings, such as the Stevenskerk, a beautiful gothic church known for its high tower and impressive interior.

Another interesting spot is the Hessenberg, a hill in the lower town known for its historic character and modern architecture. The area around the railway bridge is worth a visit too, with its beautiful view over the Waal and the buildings around it.

We are going to discover all of it. Nijmegen is known for its variety, its sociable character and its city parks. There are plenty of parks in the centre, such as the Kronenburgerpark, or the Valkhof with its fine view of the Waalbrug. Nijmegen is a very photogenic city, with its picturesque streets, historic buildings and beautiful parks. In short, Nijmegen is a city no street photographer should miss.

In the workshop I teach you to hunt and to fish. We look at framing and at capturing movement. And if you have questions of your own, we cover those too.

We start with coffee and the technique: framing and capturing movement. There is room for your own questions too.

Getting to work
Into the city, with guided assignments using assignment cards you can take home with you. I take you to the best spots.

Lunch
A sandwich and something to drink, included. After lunch the focus shifts from individual techniques to building a series.

Wrapping up
A short review over coffee or tea. You do your own editing at home; I am happy to give you feedback by email on five photographs.

This street photography workshop runs from 10.30 to 14.00 (3.5 hours).
A short review at the end of the workshop, with coffee or tea of course.
Level for this street photography workshop: all levels.
Recommended lens: whichever lens you feel comfortable with, but 28 to 50mm full frame is a good guide.

This workshop can be given in Dutch or in English. The group workshop goes ahead with a minimum of two participants.

About Michiel

I am Michiel Heijmans, a professional photographer. I teach street photography workshops in the Netherlands and abroad. I wrote the photography books De Wet van de Straat, The Observer and the course book Straatfotobijbel. In 2025 I appeared on the Dutch television programme Het Perfecte Plaatje op reis. I am also co-host of the popular photography podcast 30 Minuten Sluitertijd.
