MENTORING SESSION
A mentoring session with Michiel
Two hours about your photography, and nothing else.
Since my books, the talks and the podcast I keep getting the same question: “Could we not sit down together some time?” Usually there is something concrete behind it. Somebody is stuck, doubting a direction, carrying an idea that will not get off the ground, or has lost a bit of the fun.
That is exactly what this is for. You book two hours of my time. You talk, I ask questions and think out loud with you. By the end you know what you are going to do.
Who it is for
For anyone who photographs and is running into something. I do not believe in years of experience, I believe in hours of experience. Whether you are just starting or have been at it for twenty years, the questions differ but the conversation works the same way.
Things we could talk about:
The direction of your work. What are you making, and why this in particular?
A selection or a series that is not going the way you want.
A book, an exhibition or a project sitting in your head.
The first steps as a self-employed photographer, or the next one.
Work you take on and work you would be better off leaving.
Getting out of the rut. Back to why you started.
You are also welcome to simply turn up with a folder of photographs and ask what I think. That makes for a perfectly good conversation.

How it works
Beforehand. You send me a short note about what you are wrestling with and, if it is relevant, work for me to look at. I go through it before we speak, so that we do not lose the first twenty minutes catching up.
The conversation. Two hours, at my place in Wijchen or somewhere that suits you. We start at the table and if it is going well, we walk a stretch. Talking with a camera in your hand is often easier than talking about a camera. We look at pictures, we make it concrete. I am honest, even when that is briefly uncomfortable. That is what you are paying me for.
Afterwards. You get a short summary from me on paper: what we discussed and what the next steps are. So that it does not stay a pleasant afternoon.
Perhaps that is enough. Often it is. If there is more, we schedule a follow-up whenever you need one.
I do at most two conversations a month with the same person. Between two sessions you need time to photograph, to have doubts and to do something with it. Without that time it stays talk.
Practical
Two hours: € 295 incl. VAT. Preparation and the summary afterwards included.
We do this in person, not through a screen. At my place in Wijchen, or somewhere that suits you. For locations more than ten kilometres from Wijchen I charge € 0.50 per kilometre.
I schedule at most two conversations a month with the same person. After you book I get in touch within two working days and we fix a date. Usually you are sitting at the table within two or three weeks.
Follow-up session: € 196 for an hour and a half, bookable whenever you like.
Terms
You have fourteen days to change your mind. If we schedule the conversation within those fourteen days, that period ends at the moment we make the appointment.
I share my experience and my opinion, but the choices remain yours. I am not liable for the outcome of decisions you make. Every conversation is different, and you are the one colouring it in.
