Theme of this walk: Animals in the city

We are repeating a theme from previous years. It was surprising how many animals we came across on that walk. It is also perfect practice for shooting from a low perspective and for interacting with people on the street, and it simply produces lovely images. You are of course completely free to stick to the theme or to ignore it.

We meet on the Grote Markt at the statue of Mariken. The walk starts at 9:30 and at 11:30 we have a drink together to finish at cafe De Blonde Pater.

Theme of this walk: Leading lines

On this walk we cross the Waalbrug and head via Veur-Lent to the Snelbinder railway bridge. A round we have walked many times over the past few years, and one that always draws a good crowd and a good mood. During this walk we focus on leading lines in the broadest sense. Pick a subject and see how you can guide the viewer towards it. I am very curious what we will come up with.

We meet at Kelfkensbos, at the Martin’s Place snack bar, so we can walk to the Waalbrug easily. The walk starts at 9:30 and at 11:30 we have a drink together to finish, for instance at De Blonde Pater on the corner of Houtstraat and Hezelstraat.

Theme of this walk: Architecture in street photography

On this walk we focus on people in relation to the buildings around them. Nijmegen has more history than any other city in the Netherlands (over 2000 years) and holds a fine mix of old and new architecture. We walk through the Hessenberg and behind the Molenstraat, through alleys and across wide squares, looking for good combinations for our photos. For an extra touch we try to find interesting textures: very clean brickwork with unruly greenery, or that one statue hidden behind a tangle of construction fencing.

During the walk we can of course apply everything we practised on earlier walks (you really do not need to have joined those, though you may well have grown attached to the monthly walks by now): layering, lines, the human element, reflections and so on.

Theme of this walk: Holidays

Maybe you have had yours already, maybe it is still coming, but the holiday season is here again. You can see it in the swim rings and other sun, sea and beach products in the shops, in people who seem a good deal cheerier, and in the tourists slowly trickling back into the city. We go looking for the things that say summer to you. Whether that is the wonderful colours of a shop window or of holidaymakers, or the sun worshipper in the Kronenburgerpark.
Photograph whatever you want, the theme is only there to give you a challenge. It would be lovely to have you along.

Theme of this walk: From Valkhof to Kronenburg

We walk through the parks, from calm into the chaos of the city and back into the calm. It is August, so the parks are usually busy. Can you catch a moment of stillness in the Valkhofpark or the Kronenburgerpark, or in the city in between? Photograph whatever you want, the theme is only there to give you a challenge. It would be lovely to have you along.

Theme of this walk: Where land meets water

The Spiegelwaal is an impressive side channel of the river Waal near Nijmegen, dug as part of the Room for the River programme. The project was designed to give the Waal extra space at high water, preventing floods and making the city safer. Building the Spiegelwaal changed the landscape around Nijmegen considerably and created a unique mix of nature, recreation and water management.

For street photographers and landscape photographers the Spiegelwaal is a wonderful location. Modern hydraulic engineering, natural landscape and the city right next door add up to an enormous range of subjects.

We meet at the Tankversperring Lent WWII, with a bus stop just around the corner (just past the Waalbrug). The walk starts at 9:30 and at 11:30 we have a drink together to finish, for instance at Cafe De Zon in Veur-Lent.

Theme of this walk: Music, heard and seen

The city moves to a rhythm, whether that is hard rock or the blues. In a time of headphones everywhere, this month we look for movement, interaction and interplay in the city. A musician, or a student cycling in rhythm who, on the way to Rob en Elly’s record palace, is already ringing out the tune of the record they are after on their bell. A song on every scaffold, that kind of idea.
