In the Midden-Walchers dialect, the now rarely used word “oprèè” means something like “dressing nicely,” and that’s exactly what I thought when I saw this dress fluttering in the wind. Even when you’re cleaning the windows, it’s perfectly fine to make an effort with your outfit. Coincidentally, in the Ouddorps dialect, the word actually means “to clean.”

The flip-flops add a splash of red to the scene. The yellow points the way, and the triangle of dark elements completes the picture. This photo was selected for a group exhibition in Paris (2023) and will travel to Milan in 2024 for a second exhibition. From Domburg to the world!

The world looks very different from above. Walking along the railroad tracks in Nijmegen, carefully staying on the bike path, I leaned over the railing. The moon was shining down on me, and someone cycled by. There was time to wait, to anticipate the next cyclist.

I hit print and looked at my little screen with satisfaction. It reminded me of the scene from *E.T.*, that 1982 movie. A modern take on a classic image. In black and white.

We walked across the bridge—I don’t even remember which one it was. Hunger, thirst, and the crowds in the touristy part of the French capital had us feeling “hangry”—a little cranky from being hungry. We turned right because I’d spotted a little restaurant there yesterday.

In the distance, a woman or a man—I can’t quite tell—seemed to be watching the city pass by, undisturbed. With their head bowed, the world ceased to exist for a moment.

The sandwich wasn't anything special, but I couldn't help but smile.

I didn’t take many photos there in 2025—just color photos in Paris. The trip was an exercise in contrast and opposites. In the gallery at the Palais Royal, however, I found a few photos that simply had to be in color—ones that captured the romance of the French capital, and this is one of them.

It was quiet at the historic restaurant Le Grand Véfour. In the distance, a woman was walking her dog, and I took a photo.

How do you describe Paris without actually mentioning Paris? These bistro tables wait patiently for their guests and welcome them with open arms.

“Bistro” comes from the Russian word “Snel”; the impatience of the Russians is reflected in the small restaurants where they liked to go for a quick meal. That sense of urgency is gone at these little tables. The tranquil atmosphere fits well with the times. Everything moves so fast these days.

In the evening sun, a man is packing up his beach chair. He’s enjoying the summer. I look over the dune at the skipper steering his boat toward Antwerp. He’s leaning over the helm.

The red complements the green of the dunes, which sway in the wind. The ship plows its way through choppy waters. Knot by knot, Antwerp draws nearer.

An evening stroll after a good glass of wine and an Italian meal at the local pizzeria. My drone soars gracefully through the air while, far below it, the waves rush toward the beach.

Patterns in white race across the translucent blue-green, and I watch my screen as layers flow into one another. I press the shutter and see thoughts stumbling over one another. Bright light makes the white even whiter. The sea brings peace, even as it is restless itself.

Aan het eind van de wandeling zie je het langzaam verdwijnen van de pier. Plank voor plank neemt hij afscheid van ons.

Ik wilde hem nog één keer goed vastleggen, omdat ik zie dat de natuur hem overneemt. Deze zomer fotografeerde ik met mijn drone de weggeslagen planken en de eenzame visser die onverschrokken toch zijn lijn uitgooid. De Engelsen noemen het ephemeral, vluchtig. Voor mij is het een gedicht dat zich uitstrekt van de kust de zee in.

I walk onto the beach to have a cup of coffee at a beach bar with a good friend. In the distance, I see the red ship approaching. On a whim, I grab my camera. Click. Another click.

From the North Sea, ships are steadily carried along on the waves toward Antwerp. Their cargo is unknown, the captain is tired, and the harbor is in sight. On the beach, a woman is playing with her dog.
