What are polaroids?

Polaroids, also called digital polaroids or digitals, are simple, natural photographs of models, meant for use by modelling agencies. They show you as you are: without make-up or editing, in natural light or soft studio lighting. These are the images agencies use to judge whether you fit their books.

The strength of a good polaroid lies in its simplicity. No glamour, no heavy styling, but good lighting, a relaxed atmosphere and sharp, fresh images. Which is exactly why agencies value reliable, professional polaroids.

You might think: “Could my brother or a friend not just take a few photographs?” They could. But agencies see the difference immediately. Bad lighting, the wrong lens or an awkward posture can cost you the chance of an intake. And that would be a shame.

With me you get:

So all you have to think about is yourself.

You come exactly as you are: natural, fresh, without make-up. We take the time to build a relaxed atmosphere. No hurry, but plenty of focus. From start to finish we are busy for a little over an hour.

We make portraits from the front, from the side and at three quarters. With a neutral expression, and sometimes a small smile. I also photograph you head to toe, so agencies get a good sense of your build and your presence. Everything is discussed as we go, and I show you the results in between. Better for you, and better for the result.

We shoot the polaroids in my studio in Nijmegen, on the creative NYMA site, or, if you prefer, at another location in natural daylight.

Less is more. Choose clothes that show your silhouette clearly: fitted or slim-fit jeans, and a white (or black) top, vest or T-shirt. No bold prints or bright colours. No jewellery, thick socks or heavy make-up either. Simple, comfortable and natural works best.

If the agency asks for it explicitly, bring a black bikini or a basic set of underwear (no print, no lace).

On average you get 10 to 15 usable polaroids, ready to send straight to agencies or add to your portfolio. Think of:

• A front-on portrait, straight into the camera

• A side view

• A three-quarter profile

• Full-body from the front, the side and behind

• A close-up or detail if useful (eyes, hands, hair)
