Making series

In May 2025 I gave a talk at Fotocafe West-Brabant. A wonderful room with 165 people all listening attentively to my stories about street photography.

Because I am never quite satisfied with my by now lengthy talk about inspiration, De Wet van de Straat (in Dutch), examples and approach, I thought I would add a piece about series to this version of my presentation.

If you focus on a series while you are out, or simply carry that series in your rucksack in a manner of speaking, you keep getting those small moments of luck when you can add another photo to the collection. It motivates you, it makes you look differently, and in the end I am convinced it makes you a better photographer.

Series are everywhere. A series often comes about because after a couple of hours on the street you still remember that one photo, or think “I have photographed that before”.

If you have no inspiration, here are a few ideas:

• People just stepping into or out of somewhere

• People caught in frames such as doors or windows

• Nature between the concrete

• People with no visible face

• Animals in the streetscape

• Differences between young and old
