Paris was full of photos again!
Last Friday I was standing on the square by the Bassin de la Villette. Four people beside me, all with cameras round their necks. And before we had taken a single photo, the mood was already good.
That is what I value so much about small groups. You get to know each other quickly. You laugh quickly. And you learn quickly too, because you are not only watching me, you are watching what the others do.
Paris gave us everything.
Sun on Friday, rain on Saturday, then sun again. That may sound like bad luck, but in street photography changeable weather is really a gift. Rain means soft light. No hard shadows. People carrying on regardless of the drops. Paris could not care less. The city always keeps going.
We walked through Belleville to Père-Lachaise, dived into the covered passages around the Palais Royal and finished up at the Sacré-Cœur. For two days we walked through districts you do not know from the postcards. And still everyone made images that told that story. The story of that specific day. That one street. That moment. Seen with their own eyes.
Together we decided to have a drink the day before the masterclass. Afterwards we spontaneously ate together. No cameras for a while, just talking it over. That sort of initiative says everything about the people who come along with me.
Maurice wrote afterwards: “Two days of putting street photography into practice with Michiel guiding you is a photography party.” Mirjam added that I take you into my world of street photography and show you how to get to a result.
That is exactly what I want. Not for everyone to copy my style, but for everyone to leave with their own style, only sharper.
