My camera distracts me

Published on 23 November 2025

Silly, really. Anyone who knows me knows my Fujifilm X100V is almost an extension of my arm. And still, it distracts me. It distracts me because with that camera I am only occupied with photography. It distracts me because through the camera I see pictures everywhere and forget to enjoy myself. I forget to read, to discover, to find some rest. My camera distracts me.

As I write this, Den Bosch station is slowly rolling out from under me. My camera is in my bag and I am finally getting round to my newsletter. Of course, I am on my way to Utrecht and there I will lose myself in photography for hours. But that does not have to happen yet. The train shakes and a woman with a far too large suitcase almost falls off the stairs she is climbing. I have never got on with those double-deckers, they move too much.

I answer an email. A one-to-one workshop in Nijmegen, lovely, of course that is possible. It is all related, but with my camera in my bag, travel time becomes working time, and things get finished that I no longer have to do tonight. And let us be honest, I could do this route in my sleep. I almost stand up automatically when we are nearly there.

My camera distracts me, unless I go out deliberately to photograph. Twenty more minutes, lad. Then you can come out of the bag again.
