About Michiel

My name is Michiel Heijmans, and I’m a photographer, writer, and podcast host. My passion lies in portraits and street photography—or, as I like to call it: commissioned and unsolicited portraits. In both, I seek out emotion and stillness—what often remains unseen. A gesture, a glance, a moment when someone briefly forgets themselves and, in doing so, becomes truly visible.

My work all comes together in my studio at Wijchen, which I jokingly call my treehouse. From the second floor, I look out over the meadows, with coffee, cameras, and everything else needed to make a portrait shoot go smoothly.

“I’ve done a lot of photo shoots, but Michiel’s photos are really different—more authentic and more personal. I’ve never seen myself like that before.”

PORTRAITS

Pause, the core of my work

If I could keep doing just one thing, it would be Pause. A half-day that’s all yours, during which we hit the pause button. You can step out of your routine, brainstorm, reflect, or just do nothing for a while. And in that quiet moment, we’ll work together to find a portrait that shows you just as you truly are.

I'm not a therapist. I can't help you overcome your traumas. But I can give you the space and peace of mind you need to stop thinking about them for a while, or to feel that it's okay to let them be there. Whatever they may be.

The fact that I’m such a big fan of Pause has everything to do with my own story. At the end of 2020, I hit a wall. Burnout reared its head and stayed by my side for eighteen months. It still pops in for coffee every now and then. During that time, I sold my stake in Yoast—where I had been COO and co-owner until then—and completely changed course. For myself, and for the people around me.

What I learned back then about slowing down, listening, and not judging, I incorporate into every Pausesession. You’re under no obligation to do anything, you don’t have to try your best, and you don’t have to have a story to tell. You can just be yourself. That’s exactly when the photos become special.

A " Pause " lasts about four hours and costs 492 euro, including ten black-and-white photos that together provide an honest summary of our conversation. It is intended for photographers, theater artists, songwriters, entrepreneurs, and anyone who is ready for a genuine moment just for themselves.

I often hear people say afterward, “I don’t like having my picture taken, but this felt different.” That’s exactly what I want.

Workshops and Master Classes

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

In addition to portrait photography, I teach street photography workshops in the Netherlands and abroad. In my two-day “ masterclass ,” I’ll take you into the hustle and bustle of Paris or London, where you’ll learn to see things in a truly different way. No tricks—just mindfulness. On major shopping streets and in small squares, along the waterfront, or in a city park.

A trainer at De Baak once told me: “If you don’t do anything with people, it’s a shame for them.” It’s the best compliment I’ve ever received, and one I’ve always kept close to my heart.

Writing, Talking, Sharing

Three Books About the Street

De Wet van de Straat (2025), an e-book co-authored with lawyer Charlotte Meindersma in which we discuss all the rules in a practical way, using concrete examples.

The Observer (2024), published by KOMMA Publishing, is more of an art book presenting my personal perspective on the street and on the present moment.

The Straatfotobijbel (2023), published by Photofacts Publishing, a comprehensive textbook for anyone who wants to seriously learn street photography.

30 Minuten Sluitertijd

Since 2024, my friend Niels de Kemp and I have been happily producing the photography podcast 30 Minuten Sluitertijd. In each episode, we discuss a photography topic in a lighthearted, relatable way. Tune in on YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts.

I’m also the owner and administrator of the community site straatfotografie.nl, where Dutch street photographers of all skill levels come together. I also run fotografie-presets.nl and fotoapps.nl.

On TV and in magazines

On June 18, 2025, I appeared as an expert on the RTL 4 show *Het Perfecte Plaatje * on the Road. From ITV Studios in Hilversum, I shared tips on street photography without interfering with the moment.

In 2023 and 2024, I was a regular columnist for *Focus Magazine*. Since 2025, I have been writing monthly columns for the online course platform Photofacts.nl.

My work has also been published in Zoom.nl magazine and DIGIfoto PRO.

My Studio

My studio is located in Wijchen, near Nijmegen. I jokingly call my studio my “treehouse” because I look out over the meadows from the second floor. It’s a place for coffee and cameras—a space that feels cozy but is large enough for all my portrait shoots. Everything you need is here: from a variety of fabric backdrops to a steamer and a hair dryer, and of course all the lighting you’d expect—both natural light and a range of continuous and flash lights. A warm, relaxed atmosphere is my top priority!

My photo studio with a gray background, a wooden chair, a small round stool, and a few photos on the floor in the corner. A flash and a softbox mounted on a tripod are visible.
My photo studio, complete with a backdrop, softbox lighting, photography accessories, and plants, set up for photo shoots.
My photo studio has large windows that offer a view of the outside world. In the center are two red chairs, a small table with decorations, and a small red stool.

Room for Creativity

In addition to photography and writing, I regularly give lectures and workshops, often on the topic of street photography. Here you’ll find my upcoming schedule.

On top of all that, I’m the father of my daughters Puck and Linde and married to Esther, who still gives me the freedom to delve deeper into photography, even when I’m away for a few days for a workshop abroad. In 2026, Paris and London are both on the agenda twice.

From Yoast to Photography

In a previous life, I worked in the fields of websites and search engine marketing, including as COO and co-owner of Yoast, the creators of the WordPress plugins (which had 120 employees when I left). In 2021, I decided to leave my desk job behind and pursue photography full-time. It’s a decision I’m happy with every single day. It’s an incredibly rich and varied world that I’m still far from having seen enough of.

These days, I choose my projects based on how challenging they are and how much I enjoy the work. Please let me know how I can help you!
