In 2023, my book Straatfotobijbel was released for Photofacts Academy. It's a summary of my street photography adventures so far. For me, it's a significant point in time, a real milestone.
It is not a book to read, but a reference work. Although, of course, I have done my utmost to write everything down in a way that I myself would enjoy reading! The result is a handy book, with insights, assignments, and challenges. It contains everything from legal and technical information to extensive exercises that you can use on the street!
All aspects of street photography
In this Straatfotobijbel, I deliberately didn't focus on just one aspect of street photography. Over the past few years, I've chatted with many other street photographers, and we've had extensive discussions about all sorts of street photography topics.
Street photography is not something you can learn from a book, precisely because of its diversity. To really progress, you have to put in the miles. Literally and figuratively. Slowly crawl out of your comfort zone. And it is precisely in all these aspects that I hope the book will provide guidance.
How do you respond to someone who asks if you took their photo?
Which cameras and lenses are good for street photography?
What should you do if the city you are visiting is too overwhelming?
What is the best way to take a particular photo?
So expect practical information, with beautiful sample photos! I hope it also shows you to learn from other street photographers, but not to mirror your heroes. Just start shooting. With the information in this book, I am sure you will develop your own preferences.
Photofacts Academy:
Street Photography Workshop
We also included a workshop with the Straatfotobijbel book. In this workshop (course), I'll take you through Nijmegen and show you, using real-life situations, how street photography actually works.
Easy exercises you can even start doing today, come rain or shine. The course is about an hour long and comes in bite-sized pieces. You'll get short, insightful videos with example photos from those sessions. As a topic comes up in the video, we'll also show you the final photo right away.
In addition to discussing the adventures on the street at length, I will of course also briefly touch on post-processing. In street photography, this really doesn't need to be extensive. I'll show you what I would do with a photo!
What others say about the Straatfotobijbel

Michiel shares his joy and discoveries in this book with anyone who wants to know. Have you thought about this? Give that a try! This really helped me! And anything goes, nothing is a must, and remember there's only one rule: there are no rules.
It's all about finding that joy too. There's no good or bad, just the pure enjoyment of capturing that one moment. This book can definitely help you with that.

Photography is so much more than just getting your settings right. It's mainly the art of seeing, and Michiel masters that art like no other. He spots and captures the ultimate moment on the street or anywhere else. After reading his 'bible,' chances are you'll start seeing it too!

The best thing about street photography is that you can just walk out the door and never know what amazing shots you'll come home with. Michiel has clearly done his homework! This book is packed with relatable, practical, and great tips to help you get started as a street photographer!
