Antwerp, one of my favorite cities for street photography!

There are countless photogenic spots in the city, such as the Grote Markt, the Groenplaats, the Vogelenmarkt, and the streets surrounding them. Small, quiet courtyards, and the bustling Meir.

The city has a diverse character, with charming neighborhoods like Zurenborg and Eilandje and various districts such as Chinatown. This offers a wide range of opportunities for street photography, both during and after the workshop. Antwerp blends historic monuments with modern architecture, which naturally provides fantastic backdrops for our photos! In short, Antwerp is a city that has a lot to offer street photographers.

Street Photography: A Good Starting Point

A photographer strolling through Antwerp will be treated to an abundance of photogenic spots and subjects. You can take your time exploring the Stadspark, a beautiful park in the heart of the city, where the green surroundings provide a lovely contrast to the surrounding buildings. Next, of course, you’ll visit the Vogeltjesmarkt, a colorful market where fresh produce, flowers, plants, and other goods are sold. You won’t stand out in the crowd. And look around: what photogenic buildings!

Of course, you’ll also take a short walk to visit the Cathedral of Our Lady, a beautiful Gothic church known for its tall tower and impressive interior. There’s plenty to do, and I’ll make sure to cover a good cross-section of it. We’ll be finished sometime between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m., so you’ll have plenty of time to explore on your own after the workshop!

In this workshop, I'll teach you how to hunt and fish. We'll look at framing and capturing movement. And if you have any questions of your own, we'll cover those, too, of course!

  • Guided assignments based on assignment cards that you can take home with you.

  • Focus on techniques before lunch, and on creating a series after lunch.

  • Lunch is included; we'll grab a sandwich and something to drink.

  • Of course, I'll share all my experiences with you, and help you learn to see things differently.

  • Recommended camera: Any camera, preferably with a prime lens.

  • Recommended lens: Generally, use any lens you're comfortable with, but a good guideline is 28 to 50mm full-frame.

  • You can do the post-processing yourself at home, as you see fit. I’d be happy to provide feedback on 5 photos via email at feedback .

About Michiel

I'm Michiel Heijmans, a professional photographer. I give street photography workshops both here and abroad. I wrote the photography books 'De Wet van de Straat', 'The Observer', and the textbook 'de Straatfotobijbel'. In 2025, I appeared on 'Het Perfecte Plaatje op reis'. Plus, I co-host the popular photography podcast '30 Minuten Sluitertijd'.
