Amsterdam! Our capital city is known for its picturesque streets, canals, and architecture. It is a city rich in culture and history, and perhaps more than any other city, it is known for its vibrant street life.
This makes Amsterdam the perfect city for street photography. The people of Amsterdam are friendly and open, and there’s always something happening on every street corner. Amsterdam is also a very accessible city—easy to reach by train and great to explore on foot!

A Day in Amsterdam with Your Camera
An afternoon in Amsterdam. Strolling through the shopping streets and stopping at a sidewalk café. Yes, that’s another way to explore the city. But on that
You go to a little terrace to people-watch, and isn't that the best thing there is? In Amsterdam, you've probably already taken pictures of the beautiful old buildings, the Vondelpark, and the pigeons.
It’s the people of Amsterdam who make the city. As Herman van Veen once said: “All the street vendors had their own songs—for sprats and herring, for begonias.” Amsterdam is perfect for street photography, where the human element plays a key role. Whether you’re standing on a busy crosswalk near the station where people rush by on their way to work, or visiting the NDSM site and letting people blend in with the creativity of Amsterdam North.
In this workshop, I'll teach you how to hunt and fish. We'll look at framing and capturing movement. And if you have any questions of your own, we'll cover those, too, of course!

Guided assignments based on assignment cards that you can take home with you.
Focus on techniques before lunch, and on creating a series after lunch.
Lunch is included; we'll grab a sandwich and something to drink.
Of course, I'll share all my experiences with you, and help you learn to see things differently.

This street photography workshop runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (3.5 hours).

Level for this street photography workshop: All levels.
Recommended camera: Any camera, preferably with a prime lens.
Recommended lens: Generally, use any lens you're comfortable with, but a good guideline is 28 to 50mm full-frame.
You can do the post-processing yourself at home, as you see fit. I’d be happy to provide feedback on 5 photos via email at feedback .

I'm Michiel Heijmans, a professional photographer. I give street photography workshops both here and abroad.
