I met Charlotte Meindersma, whom I had known "online" for years, at Cupp in Utrecht in 2023. My notebook and phone in hand, and far too many questions. Her instant coffee seemed like the right way to get answers quickly.
My passion for street photography led me to think more and more about what is and isn't allowed on the street. I heard other street photographers say, "Anything goes in public spaces." I didn't believe a word of it.
My Oploskoffie with Charlotte turned into a walk with a camera, hundreds of DMs on Instagram, and a workshop in London. All those conversations sparked the idea for a book, an ebook. With all those rules. And then practical.
We decided to write down our conversation. I added some photos and Charlotte explained in detail what is and isn't allowed, legally speaking.
“De Wet van de Straat is exactly what street photographers need: an honest and easy-to-understand chat about what's legally allowed and not allowed on the street. Charlotte and Michiel explain the complex rules using relatable examples and real-life situations. A must-read for any photographer who wants to hit the streets with confidence and respect.”
De Wet van de Straat, an ebook
In De Wet van de Straat, you'll find everything about public space restrictions, portrait rights, and copyright, explained in plain language, as far as it applies to street photography.
This book is emphatically not intended to scare you or take away the fun of street photography. In fact, I find that with this knowledge, I walk around much more relaxed. I know what I am allowed to do, and where I might choose to bend the rules a little, because this book provides enough insight for that too. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide how much you want to stay within the lines, but it is good to be aware of the consequences.
Withthis e-book in your pocket, you can walk the streets with confidence, knowing your rights and where they end.
