Join a photo walk [fotowolk] in Nijmegen and learn to look at the place you've been visiting for years with fresh eyes!
A photo walk is an organized social activity. An opportunity for photographers to photograph their surroundings and shoot series. And Nijmegen is a fantastic city for street photography.
Multiple dates per year. Start at 9:30 a.m., walk until 11:30 a.m., and finish with coffee/tea until 12:00 p.m. Starting point: see information below, varies per walk.
Document it NOW. Not that you have to document it right away, but let's record it NOW. TODAY. The everyday. The things you only see when you know where to look!
Unique photos. Created together.
The FOTOWOLK photo walks in Nijmegen are not actual workshops, but you learn so much! Professional photographer Michiel Heijmans will show you a different way of looking at your surroundings. And by exploring the city you know so well with a group, you will see new things every time you go for a walk!
In 2026, there will be Fotowolks in April, May, June, September, and October:
April
Photo cloud April 23: Bridge tour
Theme of this walk: A different perspective
During this walk, we will stroll across the Waal Bridge and walk via Veur-Lent to the Snelbinder railway bridge. This is a route we have walked many times in recent years, and it always attracts a large number of participants and is a very enjoyable walk. This year it will take place in May, with the hope of lovely weather and beautiful skies! During this walk, we will focus in the broadest sense on "a different perspective." This could be a bird's-eye view, a frog's-eye view, or the budding spring. I am very curious to see what we can create!
This month, we will meet at Kelfkensbos, near the Martin's Place cafeteria, so that we can easily walk to the Waalbrug. The walk starts at 9:30 a.m., and at 11:30 a.m. we will have a drink together to conclude the walk, for example at De Blonde Pater on the corner of Houtstraat and Hezelstraat.
May

Theme of this walk: Buildings in the city
During the May photo walk, we will focus on the buildings in the city. Nijmegen has the longest history of any city in the Netherlands (over 2000 years!) and is home to a beautiful mix of old and new architectural styles. We will walk through the Hessenberg and behind the Molenstraat through alleys and across wide squares, looking for beautiful combinations for our photos. For an extra touch, we will try to find beautiful structures: very sleek stones with messy vegetation, or that one statue hidden among a maze of construction site fences.
Of course, during the walk we can apply everything we have practiced in previous walks (you really don't have to have walked with us before, but who knows, maybe you've already become addicted to the monthly walks): Layering, lines, the human element, reflections, etcetera!
This month, we will meet at Café De Blonde Pater on Ganzenheuvel. The walk will start at 9:30 a.m., and at 11:30 a.m., we will have a drink together to conclude the walk.
June
Photo cloud June 18: Almost vacation time
Theme of this walk: Vacation
Perhaps you already have it, or it is still to come, but the vacation period is approaching again. You can see it in the swimming rings and other sun, sea, and beach products in the stores, in the people who seem much happier, and in the tourists who are slowly trickling back into the city. We are going to look for the things that you associate with holidays. Whether that's the fantastic colors of a shop window or holidaymakers, or the sun worshippers in Kronenburg Park.
Photograph whatever you want, the theme is just to give you a challenge. It would be great if you joined us!
This month, we will meet at Joris Ivensplein, at the foot of the large statue (the "bottle opener"). The walk will start at 9:30 a.m., and at 11:30 a.m., we will have a drink together at café De Blonde Pater to conclude the walk.
September
Photo cloud September 17: Tour of Spiegelwaal
Theme of this walk: On the border between land and water
The Spiegelwaal is an impressive side channel of the Waal near Nijmegen, constructed as part of the Room for the River program. This project was designed to give the Waal extra space during high water, thereby preventing flooding and improving the safety of the city. The construction of the Spiegelwaal has significantly changed the landscape around Nijmegen and created a unique combination of nature, recreation, and water management.
The Spiegelwaal is a fantastic location for street photographers and landscape photographers. The combination of modern hydraulic engineering elements, natural landscapes, and proximity to the city offers a wide range of subjects!
This month, we will meet at the Lent WWII Tank Barrier, where there is also a bus stop around the corner (just after the Waal Bridge). The walk starts at 9:30 a.m., and at 11:30 a.m., we will have a drink together to conclude the walk, for example at Café De Zon on Veur-Lent.
October
Photo cloud October 15: Animals in the city
Theme of this walk: Animals in the city
We are repeating a theme from previous years. It was surprising how many animals we encountered during our walk. It is also a perfect exercise for a low perspective, practicing interaction on the street, and of course it just produces very nice images! You are, of course, completely free to stick to the theme or not.
This month, we will meet at the statue of Mariken on the Grote Markt. The walk will start at 9:30 a.m., and at 11:30 a.m., we will have a drink together at café De Blonde Pater to conclude the walk.
Beginners, professionals, nature photographers, and studio photographers. It doesn't matter whether you only have a telephoto lens or only a macro lens; taking photos is what brings us together. A photo walk is fun, interesting, and educational for every type of photographer!
