Hello street photographer! Do you want to know all about the rules on the street? Have you always wondered if those beautiful photos of yours are actually legal? Ever doubted whether you should post something on Instagram?

I met Charlotte Meindersma, whom I had known for years "from online" in 2023 at Cupp in Utrecht. My notebook and phone in hand, and far too many questions. Her Instant coffee seemed like the right way to get answers quickly.
From my passion for street photography, I thought more and more about what is actually allowed and not allowed on the streets. I heard other street photographers exclaim: "In public spaces, anything goes". I didn't believe a word of it.
My Solution Coffee with Charlotte turned into a walk with camera, hundreds of DMs on Instagram and a street photography workshop in London. In all those conversations, the idea for a book, an ebook, was born. With all those rules. And then practically.

We decided to write down our conversation. I grabbed some more photos and Charlotte told me in great detail what is and is not allowed, legally then.
"The Law of the Street" is exactly what street photographers need: an honest and accessible conversation about what is and is not legally allowed on the street. Charlotte and Michiel explain the complex rules using recognisable examples and practical situations. Highly recommended for any photographer who wants to take to the streets with confidence and respect."

The Law of the Street, an ebook
In The Law of the Street, you will find, in plain human language, all about the limitations of public space, of portrait rights and copyright, as far as you can apply them to street photography.
This book is emphatically not to scare you or take away the fun of street photography. In fact, I find that I walk the streets much more relaxed with this knowledge. I know what I am allowed to do, and where I might choose to take the law a little wider, because this book gives plenty of insights for that too. Of course, it is ultimately up to you to decide how much you colour within the lines, but it is good to realise what the consequences can be.
